Christmas at the Ragdoll Orphanage

We were delighted. Mum had seen many Christmases at Nazareth House where she was not only a Nanny but the heart and soul of the nursery department. She never tired of telling me the story of the day I was brought to the Orphanage door. Christmas brought more excitement when we were told a nearby North East Company was giving a party for the children.

Our eyes were wide with delight when we were told that not only would Santa be there but there would be party games, jelly and ice cream. The anticipation was beyond wonderful. Never had we been so thrilled. Every Saturday mum had a day off and we would go window shopping in Newcastle. Today all the decorations would be up and we would visit our favourite shop, Fenwick's.

Rag Doll Randi

We almost ran up the escalator to the toy department. I saw the doll display first and gasped.

I had never seen a doll with long brown hair before. I would call her Caroline', I said tugging at mum's hand. I will never forget the look on my mother's face that day as she reached out and looked at the price tag. I never understood until many years later why my mother stood there that day, in the middle of Fenwick's toy department, with tears in her eyes.
